Prior to Cataclysm, this "meta-of-metas" was the only means of obtaining a 310% mount outside of the ones awarded to top-ranked arena players at the end of a PvP season, making it popular for PvE-focused players. In the Cataclysm expansion,
Master Riding (310% flight speed) was made available from flight trainers for 5k gold, but was still obtainable for free from this achievement.
In Mists of Pandaria, Master Riding was stripped from
Reins of the Violet Proto-Drake due to mounts and certain achievements becoming account-wide. Thus "WaL,STIB" is not as popular with players as it once was.
