Spectral Essence was a quest reward of the obsolete quest, Kirtonos the Herald.  Originally, the trinket was necessary for seeing and interacting with the spirits haunting Caer Darrow.  It was useful primarily for having access to an item repair vendor.  Since Cataclysm, however, any player may see and interact with the spirits.  Spectral Essence is now a nostalgic memento of a different time.
